Restrictions
Overview
- Restrictions can be set per page, block, or file.
- Restrictions are controlled by Matrix Roles, with the plugin ‘Members‘ for page level access.
- On Page level restrictions, any users who can edit the content can view the content regardless of role. (Use a different browser or private browser to test.)
- Block level access is managed with the plugin blockvisibility.
- File restrictions are managed with plugin Prevent Direct Access. The basic account has ‘admin’ or public. Need ‘Gold’ level to be able to restrict by role.
Restrict an entire page
To set restrictions, when editing the page, use the Content Permissions (below main body content) and set to the desired Matrix role. For basic Member, set to “Maxx Member-Only”. (tip, search for ‘only’)
Example restricted page: https://prod-idfa.rd.net/z-sandbox/test-restricted-page/
- Users who are not logged in, trying to go to that URL, will be taken to the member login page on Matrix Maxx.
- A user of the correct role will be able to see the full page and content.
- A user not of the correct role will see the page title and the message “Sorry, but you do not have permission to view this content.’
The system wide 403 message can be edited in the plugin Members > Settings, field “Error Message”.
You can override the standard 403 no access message on any page, using the ‘Error Message’ field under the content.
Restrict blocks on a page
To set restrictions on any single block, use the block setting ‘Visibility’
Example page: https://prod-idfa.rd.net/z-sandbox/test-restricted-blocks-and-files/
- For blocks that should be visible to anyone who is not logged in (the prompt for users to log in): set Visibility to ‘User Role” = Logged-out.
- For the blocks for people who are logged in but not the correct role (the “Sorry, you do not have the proper access level’) set Visibility to ‘User Role” = User Role, Role = Maxx Member only, and ‘Hide from selected roles‘.
- For the restricted content, set Visibility to ‘User Role’, and then role= Maxx Member Only.
Restrict a file, including the URL
A file that has no restrictions opens directly. Example: https://prod-idfa.rd.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Sample-File-for-training.pdf
If the file URL needs to be restricted, in Media, at the list of files, on Prevent Direct Access, click Configure File Protection and restrict the file.
Once IDFA approves ‘Gold’ license, IDFA can restrict access by Role.
(Without gold, IDFA can still put links to files behind restricted areas, but the risk is anyone can share that file URL and the site will not stop that access. But it is also true – even with Gold – anyone who has access can download and share the actual file.)
